Amazon is investing $2.75 billion in AI start-up Anthropic, known for the AI chatbot Claude, which competes with OpenAI and ChatGPT among others. The US tech giant had made an initial investment of $1.25 billion in Anthropic.
Amazon had announced in September that it would invest a total of $4 billion in Anthropic. Making good on the promise the Seattle-based e-commerce giant has now made the new investment of $2.75 billion.
Amazon isn’t the only tech company investing in San Francisco-based Anthropic. Earlier, Alphabet’s Google Cloud had invested $300 million in the start-up, and agreed to invest up to $2 billion in the AI company.
“Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers’ experiences, and look forward to what’s next,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of data and AI at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing subsidiary.
