Microsoft Says Goodbye to OneDrive URL Upload Functionality

Microsoft is discontinuing support for the preview feature that allows the users to upload files to OneDrive from a URL.

Microsoft reports in a blog post: As part of our ongoing efforts to improve OneDrive performance and reliability, we have decided to discontinue support for the preview feature that allows you to upload files to OneDrive from a URL. This feature was introduced as an experimental option for users who wanted to save files from the web directly to their OneDrive without downloading them first and was only ever supported for Consumer OneDrive. However, we have found that this feature has low usage and high maintenance costs, and it does not align with our vision for OneDrive as a cloud storage service that syncs your files across devices.

When is this happening?

We will stop supporting this feature on March 29, 2024. After this date, you will no longer be able to upload files to OneDrive from a URL as described in the documentation. Any existing files that you have uploaded from a URL will remain in your OneDrive and will not be affected by this change.

What do I need to do?

If you are using any capabilities that rely on Upload by URL please review and plan to migrate functionality ASAP. Options include uploads of small files, or for larger files please use upload sessions. This functionality will stop working without warning any time after March 29, 2024.
