OpenAI has announced the acquisition of Astral which focuses on developing open-source tools for Python developers. OpenAI will integrate Astral’s tools into its Codex ecosystem.
Astral has built some of the most widely used open source Python tools, helping developers move faster with modern tooling like uv, Ruff, and ty. OpenAI says that it will continue to support Astral’s open-source products.
With the help of Astral’s tooling and engineering expertise, OpenAI aims to accelerate the development of Codex and expand what AI can do across the software development lifecycle.
The closing of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of regulatory approval. Until the closing, OpenAI and Astral will remain separate and independent companies. Financial details regarding the acquisition have not been disclosed.
After closing, the Astral team will join the Codex team at OpenAI.
